St John was born John Ilyitch Sergieff, on October 19, 1829, in the small village of Soura, Arkhangelsk, Russia. He came from a family of devout yet impoverished Christian parents.

Despite their financial struggles, his parents prioritised his spiritual and academic education. Initially, St John struggled significantly with his studies, unable to read even basic letters at nine years old. Sent to school in Arkhangelsk, his progress was slow, causing him great distress due to the financial burden he felt it was placing on his parents. Through fervent prayer and not giving up, he experienced a miraculous breakthrough, allowing him to read and understand with newfound ease.

St John excelled in his studies, eventually graduating at the top of his class from seminary. In 1851, he was admitted to the Theological Academy of Saint Petersburg. After his father's death, St John supported his mother with the modest earnings from a registrar position he gratefully accepted. Though initially drawn to monastic life and missionary work in Siberia, a visionary dream redirected him toward the spiritual enlightenment of serving a Parish and those around him.

A Life of Ministry and Service

After completing his studies, St John married Elisabeth, the daughter of Archpriest K. P. Nevitzki, and was ordained a priest on December 12, 1855. He was appointed assistant priest at Saint Andrew’s Cathedral in Kronstadt, recognising it as the church from his dream. For fifty-three years, he served there, dedicating his life to the poor and needy of his parish.

Kronstadt, a naval base near Saint Petersburg, was plagued by immense poverty, disease, and sin. St John would venture into the most destitute areas, offering both spiritual and physical aid, often fasting until late evening. His selfless dedication won him the love and trust of his parishioners.

A Beacon of Faith and Compassion

Living in a modest cottage, St John soon became surrounded by people seeking his guidance and blessings. Known for his powerful intercessions and healing, he tirelessly responded to countless appeals for help. His daily routine included intense morning prayers, celebrating the Eucharist, visiting the sick, and teaching. His fame spread across Russia, Europe, and the whole world, drawing both the rich and the poor to him.

In 1857, St John began teaching scripture at the municipal school in Kronstadt, where his love for children and dedication to their spiritual growth made him a beloved figure. Despite his growing fame, he remained committed to the poor, founding the House of Industry in 1873 to provide work, shelter, and education for the destitute.

St John’s demanding schedule was sustained by his deep prayer life and frequent reception of Holy Communion. His devotion was evident in his radiant demeanour during and after the Eucharist, reflecting spiritual joy and strength.

In his later years, St John’s health declined, yet he continued his ministry. He celebrated his final liturgy on December 10, 1908, and passed away on December 20, 1908. His funeral in Saint Petersburg was attended by tens of thousands, mourning the loss of their beloved spiritual father and intercessor. Even after his death, his legacy of healing and spiritual guidance continues to inspire and draw Christians and non-believers to his tomb.
